Cutty Ranks
Philip Thomas, born on 12 February 1965 in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, is a dancehall recording musician. He had an interest in music from the time he was 11 years old. His curiosity in sound systems led him to meet different and unique mentors along the way like Tony Rebel. Ranks worked with several sound systems such as Gemini sound system and Arrows sound system. Techniques label’s Winston Riley recorded ‘Gunman Lyrics’ as his debut single in 1986. ‘The Bomber’ was released by Shocking Vibes label. After joining Penthouse label in 1990, the hit ‘Pon Mi Nozzle’ was birthed. Ranks made his debut album The Stopper in 1991 followed by Mi Heart and Six Million Ways To Die, in 1996. Back With A Vengeance was released in 2000 and it had a flare of hip-hop. He produced music on his own label titled Philip Music label and Full Blast was the album that ensued in 2012. Ranks has done some good collaborations like in 2013 when he featured on ‘Slums of the Ghetto,’ by T-Chainz. In 2018, ‘My Town’ and ‘Dame Tu Cosita’ were pretty popular songs as at that year. ‘Dame Tu Cosita’ had a remix done for it with featured artists Karol G, El Chombo, and Pitbull. 2020 marked 2 songs, particularly that were done as a compilation album. The songs were titled ‘Shiny Collar Bone’ and ‘Holy Calamafuck. Ranks has released a good number of music videos on YouTube like 2020’s ‘Natural Beauty,’ featuring Akeem.
