Pressure And Slide Riddim 1986-2007PRESSURE and SLIDE RIDDIM 1986-2007 produced by VARIOUS LABELS

Pressure And Slide is one of those riddims that never really leaves the dance. It starts with the snappy, strutting swing of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires’ original “Pressure and Slide, ” then keeps resurfacing in dancehall form through the late ’80s and beyond. The version here pulls from different labels and eras, but Willie Lindo’s 1986 work around Beres Hammond’s “One Dance Can Do” helped reintroduce the pattern to a new dancehall audience and sparked a fresh run of cuts. The feel is light on its feet, with a percussive bounce, bright keyboard colors, and enough space for singers and deejays to ride the groove without crowding it.

The lineup captures that range well. Beres Hammond brings his smooth, soulful phrasing, while Barrington Levy’s “Please Jah Jah” gives the riddim a tougher edge. Audrey Hall’s “One Dance Won’t Do” sits in the sweet spot between rootsy singing and dancehall pull, and Johnny P, Ashman, Super Chick, and Anthony B all sharpen the deejay side with fast-talking, sound system-ready deliveries. Johnny Osbourne’s pair of cuts adds veteran weight, and Tenor Saw’s “No Work On Sunday” is the kind of early dancehall gem that keeps the riddim’s legacy alive.

By the time you get to Cutty Ranks, Glen Washington, Sugar Minott, and the instrumental and sax versions, the project reads less like a tidy compilation and more like a long conversation across generations. That is what makes Pressure and Slide endure: it can sound sweet, stern, playful, and deeply Jamaican all at once.
