Di Genius Records is the production imprint built around
Jamaican producer Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, whose name has
become closely tied to modern dancehall’s clean, melodic, and
crossover-friendly edge. Emerging from Kingston’s Big Ship studio
family, McGregor came up young in reggae and dancehall, learning
the ropes in a setting shaped by his father, Freddie McGregor, and
quickly developing a reputation for sharp riddim work and a
polished, radio-ready sound.
As a label and production brand, Di Genius Records has been
associated with some of the most recognizable Jamaican releases of
the 2000s and 2010s. Its catalogue includes work on Sean Paul’s “So
Fine” and “Got 2 Luv U,” as well as Mavado’s “So Special,” tracks
that helped define how dancehall could travel beyond the island
without losing its pulse. That balance, between street-level energy
and broad commercial appeal, became a key part of the Di Genius
identity.
The label’s reach also extended into artist development. Di Genius
Records has been linked with early and important production support
for younger Jamaican voices, helping shape the sound of artists
such as Jahmiel, Vershon, and Masicka as they moved into wider
recognition. Alongside its singles and riddims, the imprint has
remained active on mixtapes and compilation-style releases, with
titles like the Championship Riddim keeping its name present in the
culture.
What sets Di Genius Records apart is not just the volume of its
output, but the consistency of its approach. McGregor’s productions
often favour crisp drums, strong melodic hooks, and a contemporary
gloss that sits comfortably between dancehall, reggae, and pop.
That versatility has made the label a familiar credit on records
that move from local rotation to international playlists, and it
has helped secure Di Genius Records a lasting place in the story of
modern Jamaican production.
