Iron Belt Riddim – Di Genious Production

Iron Belt Riddim arrived in 2011 under Di Genius Production, the imprint of Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, one of the sharpest hitmakers in modern dancehall. McGregor had already built a reputation for clean, digital-forward riddims and for moving easily between artist and producer roles, and this set fits neatly into that run. It is a short six-cut project, which gives it a focused feel rather than the crowd-pleasing sprawl of some other juggling packages.

The riddim itself has a taut, clipped swing, with a punchy bass line and a hard, metallic edge that suits the title. There is enough space in the beat for the vocals to land cleanly, but the groove still has bite. The best-known cut is Chino and Bramma’s “No Talk, ” which comes in both edit and raw versions and brings the kind of tight, conversational ride that made both voices work well together. Chino, the son of Freddie McGregor, was emerging as one of dancehall’s smoother melodic singers, while Bramma had a sharper, streetwise tone.

Di Genius also voices “More Than U, ” which gives the producer himself a direct spot in the set. Elephant Man’s “Tender Touch” brings his familiar high-energy delivery to a beat that still leaves room for his personality. Laden and O. C. turn “Nah Lose Wi Medz” into a warning against badmind and loose company, while Singing Sweet’s “Stress Free” rounds things out with a more relaxed, melodic pull. The result is a lean dancehall package that balances swagger, melody, and practicality in equal measure.
