Pon Di Cocky Riddim – Di Genius Records

Pon Di Cocky Riddim arrived in 2013 through Di Genius Records, the production imprint of Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, the Kingston-bred hitmaker who came up inside the McGregor family’s Big Ship setup and became one of modern dancehall’s most influential studio minds. By that point, Di Genius had already built a reputation for crisp, melodic, club-ready music that could move from hardcore dancehall to crossover radio without losing its Jamaican edge.

This juggling runs eight deep and keeps the energy high throughout. Byronn opens with “Ki Sa Sa Yé Sa, ” Kako drops “Dancehall Macarena, ” and Leerod Banton comes through with “Kamikaze Kon Zlatan, ” while Mickige, Mighty Ki La, Nyala, Panik J and X Man each take their turn on the same sharply cut framework. The riddim has a fast, punchy bounce and a bright synth-led feel, the kind of production that leaves space for deejays to stab in quick phrases and ride the pocket hard. It feels made for dancefloor pull-ups and radio rotation alike.

Aidonia’s “Pon Di Cocky” is the anchor point for the whole project, and the instrumental version helps underline how cleanly the rhythm is put together. Across the various voicings, the strongest cuts are the ones that lock into the riddim’s bounce without overloading it, especially X Man’s “Bad Man Thing” and Byronn’s more playful opening salvo.
