Animal Instinct Riddim – Technique Records

Animal Instinct Riddim arrived in 2013 from Technique Records, with Kurt Riley at the controls and the Techniques imprint carrying the weight of a name that has been central to Jamaican music for decades. Riley, son of Winston Riley, has kept that family stamp active in modern dancehall, and this juggling sits comfortably in that line: fast, club-minded, and built for forward motion.

The riddim runs at a lively pace and has the kind of sharp bounce that leaves room for both straight bashment and more melodic riding. Beenie Man opens with “Step Up Inna Life, ” bringing veteran authority to the set, while Mavado’s “Can’t Happen” and Popcaan’s “Protect Them Lord” give the project heavyweight pull. Konshens, Demarco, Di Genius, Chino and I-Octane with Markus add different shades of energy, from brash party talk to more rooted, prayerful reflections. The version cut is included too, which is always part of the point with a good juggling: you hear how much of the swing is in the production itself, not just the voices on top.

What makes Animal Instinct work is the balance between established names and younger voices. Bramma, Cee Gee, Chevaughn, Darrio, Liquid, Ninja Kid, Notch and Raine Seville all help widen the canvas, giving the riddim that early-2010s dancehall feel where radio-ready hooks and dancefloor commands sit side by side. It is a busy set, but the rhythm stays focused enough to carry the whole thing.
