Listen to Israel

DJ Frass Records had this one in the 2010 dancehall run, and Israel Riddim arrived as a sharp, war-ready juggling built on tense synth stabs, a hard kick pattern, and a lean digital pulse that leaves plenty of space for the deejays to bark. The producer behind it, DJ Frass, is Andre Gordon, one of the more durable names in modern Jamaican dancehall production, and his label has spent years turning out riddim-driven projects and single cuts rather than chasing one-off novelty.

The lineup is heavy. Aidonia’s “Mac 90” tapped straight into the era’s lyrical warfare and was heard as a jab in the Kartel-Aidonia tension of the period. Vybz Kartel answers in kind with “Rifle Shot, ” bringing his cold, clipped delivery to the rhythm. Mavado’s “War Is In Di Air” pushes the militant mood even further, while Spice’s “Lisa Swiper” cuts through the gun talk with a sly, character-driven dancehall stance. Mr. Vegas adds a different flavor on “One Draw, ” giving the project a more playful, roots-leaning counterpoint.

The deeper cuts matter too: Talliban’s “We Dem Bwoy Deh Fear, ” Stein’s “Buss Mi Gun, ” and T’nez’s “Informer” all fit the rhythm’s combative energy, while Safhya, Saviola, and the Shankle and Soldier combination help fill out the juggling with voices that keep the project moving. Israel Riddim works because it captures a particular 2010 Kingston mood: lyrical tension, street imagery, and sound-system pressure in one compact package.
