Clearance Riddim – DJ Frass Records

DJ Frass Records dropped Clearance Riddim in 2009, and the set sits in the tougher, street-facing corner of late-2000s dancehall. Andre “DJ Frass” Gordon has long been one of Jamaica’s more dependable hitmakers, and by that point his name was already tied to major dancehall and reggae work beyond riddim packages. The clearance cut itself is voiced by Russian and DJ Frass, giving the project a producer-led identity right from the intro.

The riddim has a brisk, muscular pulse with a clipped digital swing and enough low-end pressure to carry both melodic sing-jaying and direct-fire chat. It feels made for sound system play: tight drums, lean synth lines, and a cold, pushing energy rather than anything glossy. That foundation gives Mavado’s Dem Alone real weight, with his hard-edged delivery riding the rhythm’s tension cleanly. Bounty Killer’s Rodneys Intention is the heavyweight here, bringing veteran authority and the kind of clipped, commanding phrasing that can anchor any juggling set. Mr. Vegas’ I Will Never adds a more singable, commercially tuned contrast, while Demarco’s Secret Fi Dem and Ding Dong’s My Own lean into the playful confidence that made both artists such reliable dancehall voices at the time.

Chase Cross, Munga, and Flexx fill out the project with sharper, lower-profile contributions that help the riddim hold its shape across the full run. Clearance Riddim is less about one breakout anthem than about how DJ Frass frames a whole room of artists around a tight, no-nonsense dancehall groove.
