Black Hole Riddim – High Expectations

2013 was a year when dancehall was still leaning hard into sharp, digital juggling, and Black Hole Riddim sits right in that pocket with a tense, dark pulse that leaves plenty of room for the DJs. High Expectations keep the rhythm lean and insistent, with the bass doing most of the heavy lifting while the melodies stay clipped and spare, which gives the cuts a gritty, street-level feel rather than a glossy one. The voicings from Dajigga, Grim Lord, and Shadow Blacks and King Pin fit that mood especially well, but the whole set has that same forward-pressing energy. The final stretch lands on Vietnam’s “Fashion Trend Cash and Spend, ” which feels like the point where the riddim’s sparse pull really locks in and the project closes with a cold, direct edge.
