Von Wayne Charles, born on 26 July 1972 in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica, is not only a dancehall but reggae fusion artist as well. He was known from a very young age to have a soulful voice and got moral support from family and friends who encouraged him to take on music as a professional career. Wayne got his break in 1985 when King Tubby produced his 1st single “Long and Lasting Love.” Sadly, King Tubby got killed in 1988 which affected Wayne negatively and slowed down Wayne’s career drastically. Eventually, Wayne met with Lloyd Dennis, a producer who helped him with the hit single “It’s Over Now” which was done on Cover Me riddim. Dave Kelly from Penthouse then worked on Wayne’s 2nd album titled Part 2. In 1990 he did a live performance at Alphaville. In 1992, he toured with other stars from Penthouse Records. Buju Banton took him on tour in 1994. In 2000, Wayne launched his own label Singso and 2001 he released his album Schizophrenic. After signing with Atlantic Records in 2003, “No Letting Go” was a smashing international hit done with the Diwali riddim. In 2005, he did some compilation albums with Trojan Records amongst others and 2007 saw another album Foreva. My Way and Sweet Songs were released 2012 and 2014 respectively. He then featured on the Never Mind, the Buzzcocks identity parade in October 2014. Apart from touring internationally, he recently released a music video of the hit single “Fling It Up” in 2019 and continues working on his career.
