Winnings Riddim – Di Genius Records

Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor was already one of dancehall’s most trusted young hitmakers by 2010, coming out of the Big Ship family and turning out sharp, modern rhythms from Kingston with a clean, punchy edge. Winnings fits neatly into that run. It was released in 2010 through Di Genius Records and Big Ship, with the riddim credited to Stephen McGregor and widely listed under his Di Genius production banner.

The rhythm is built for the dancefloor: bright, whine-ready, and taut rather than sludgy, with the kind of bounce that leaves room for fast talk, sly hooks, and a lot of movement in the pocket. The cuts that matter most are the ones from the usual heavyweights. Aidonia’s Brace Whine brings clipped, energetic phrasing; Beenie Man’s Something Bout Da Whine Deh gives the riddim veteran swagger; Busy Signal’s Too Much Man pushes the track with his sharp, machine-gun delivery; and Mavado’s Stullesha adds that darker, roadwise tension he was so good at in that period.

The deeper cuts help flesh out the vibe. Chino’s Tek Weh Gal, Chi Ching Ching’s Winnings, Laden’s Dis Ya Bwoy Ya, Flexxx’s Stepping Razor, Shema’s Holding On, and the Elephant Man and God combination on Reasoning all show how adaptable the riddim was across different voices and tones. It is very much a juggling project, and that is the point: Di Genius gives the selectors a clean, lively dancehall bed, and the artists do the rest.
