Wild Wild West Riddim – DJ Frass Records

DJ Frass Records had the lane mapped out on Wild Wild West Riddim, a 2015 dancehall juggling from Andre “DJ Frass” Gordon, the Kingston producer behind his own imprint and a run of modern dancehall rhythm projects. By this point, DJ Frass had already built a reputation for sharp, digital productions that travel well from yard to club, and this one sits neatly inside that catalogue.

The rhythm has a brisk, militant swing, with a dry, stuttering drum pattern and a snaking bassline that leaves plenty of room for the vocals. It feels tense rather than glossy, which suits the title and the general badman energy running through the cuts. The whole thing moves at a mid-tempo pace that still hits with enough urgency for straight-forward dancehall salutes and warning shots.

Alkaline’s Object Bingo is the obvious anchor. His clipped delivery and cold, self-assured phrasing fit the riddim’s hard edge, while Mavado brings his familiar gruff authority on Money A Di Right Thing, turning the rhythm into streetwise commentary. Spookie’s Nuh Try Test keeps the threat level high, and 3 Star’s Yuh Zimi adds another rough-voiced street chant to the mix. Innovata’s We No Fraid rounds out the set with a firmer, more defiant stance.
