CR203’s Contra Riddim arrived in 2011 as one of those fast-moving dancehall juggling sets that sounded made for radio, selectors, and late-night pull-up moments all at once. The production is credited to ZJ Chrome’s CR203 camp, and the riddim sits in that glossy, high-pressure lane he became known for: sharp drum programming, a hard forward drive, and enough space for both clean and raw cuts to breathe without losing momentum.

The lineup is anchored by some serious names. Assassin opens with “Tun Up, ” while Beenie Man pulls it into clash territory with “Short Shorts. ” Capleton’s “Choose Your Friend” and Bugle’s “Friends” keep the friend-enemy theme running through the project, and I-Octane, Khago, and Bramma all add their own warning-shot takes. Mavado is a major presence here too, with both clean and raw versions of “Do Road, ” plus the posse cut “Money” with Flexxx, Chase Cross, and 3 Star. Vybz Kartel, Popcaan, Mr. Vegas, Tifa, and Tony Matterhorn round out a riddim that clearly aimed wide without losing its street edge.

What makes Contra hit is the tension between the bounce and the lyrical temperature. It has that bright, insistent dancehall pulse, but the songs are mostly about disrespect, loyalty, envy, and survival in the dance. “Friends, ” “Choose Your Friend, ” “Disrespect, ” and “Do Road” all play into that mood, while Elephant Man’s party-ready cuts keep the energy lighter and more reckless. It is a strong snapshot of early-2010s Jamaican dancehall: clash-minded, melody-aware, and built for repeat plays.
