Fix Up Riddim Pt. 1 – Zj Liquid

ZJ Liquid has long sat in the middle of Jamaica’s dancehall ecosystem as selector, radio personality, producer and artist, and Fix Up fits neatly into the run of H2O productions that helped define his catalogue. Released in 2015, the riddim came through H2O Records and 21st Hapilos Digital, with the instrumental carrying that same tough, street-level energy Liquid had already established on earlier projects like Good Book. The beat is brisk and insistent, built for fast, commanding vocals rather than singjay drift, with a clipped drum pattern and a nagging low-end pulse that keeps the whole thing moving.

The version set pulled in some of the biggest names in the genre at the time: Agent Sasco, Alkaline, Delly Ranx, I-Octane, Konshens featuring Javada, Mavado and Vybz Kartel, with the full release also including cuts from Popcaan, Ishawna, Kalado, Demarco, Bryka, Quick Cook and Versatile. Kartel’s Fix Up is the title cut, but the riddim really clicks when voices with different temperaments clash against the same frame. Alkaline’s attack gives it a younger, sharper edge, while Mavado and Agent Sasco bring the harder, more militant tone the riddim seems designed for. Konshens and Javada open the sound up a little, adding a more melodic hook-driven contrast.

Fix Up was one of those 2015 juggling rhythms that moved easily between radio, sound systems and digital playlists. It had enough star power to travel, but the production still felt lean and local, the kind of dancehall package built to work in the dance first.
