Open Sky Riddim – Jag One|Zack Ariyah Productions

Open Sky Riddim landed in 2015 under Jag One and Zack Ariyah Productions, and the pull of it comes from the cast as much as the cut itself. It’s a hard dancehall juggling with 11 voices, released in June 2015, with Aidonia, Popcaan, Mavado, Mega Banton, Chan Dizzy, Shokryme, Tanso, Versatile, Nicko Blast, Onton and Jayds all taking a turn on the same driving frame.

The rhythm has a sharp, militant feel: stiff drums, a cold low end and enough space for the deejays to sharpen up their delivery. It sits in that mid-2010s dancehall pocket where gun talk, badman posture and street authority carry the weight, and the title itself hints at the open, tense atmosphere the instrumental creates.

Aidonia’s “Hot Up Di Place” and Popcaan’s “Badman Federation” are the obvious anchors, each riding the riddim with a different kind of swagger. Aidonia cuts with that clipped, aggressive flow he built his name on, while Popcaan brings the unruly singjay ease that made him one of the era’s defining voices. Mavado’s “Dash Weh Smaddy” adds another heavyweight angle, all menace and command. Mega Banton’s “Walk and Kuff Dem” matters too, because his veteran presence links the project to earlier dancehall badman tradition rather than just 2015 fashion.

Jag One and Zack Ariyah were already working as a production partnership around this period, and the release sits neatly in that catalogue of street-ready dancehall material. Open Sky Riddim works because it mixes proven names with lesser-known voicings and keeps the whole thing taut, grimy and ready for juggling.
