This is a big list of many (but not all) songs that use the beat called the “Taxi Riddim” (which also has other names). The original beat was created by Maurice Wellington in 1973 and produced by George Bell and Maurice Wellington. In the 1980s, many other music companies/labels started using the Taxi Riddim, and it kept being used into the 1990s, and right up to present day. This became one of the most popular rhythms in the world! There’s a list of the different labels that made songs with this beat after this list of songs.

Taxi Riddim is one of those Jamaican patterns that kept travelling long after it first surfaced in the 1970s. The early version is tied to Maurice Wellington and George Bell, and the beat later became part of the Taxi/Taxi Records orbit that Sly and Robbie helped turn into a lasting label identity. Its pull comes from the low, rolling bassline and the clipped, motorik skank that gives singers plenty of room to ride it different ways.

That flexibility is why the riddim has survived across eras. Yellowman and Fathead’s Bam Bam is one of the cuts that fixed it in dancehall memory, while Sister Nancy’s era-defining chant is often discussed alongside the same rhythmic family. By the late ’80s and ’90s, the riddim was still being re-cut by artists like Anthony Johnson, Admiral Tibet, Anthony Malvo, and Josey Wales, with each voicing shifting the mood toward slackness, culture, or sermon. The variations keep the groove alive without losing its identity.

What makes Taxi so durable is how cleanly it balances roots feel and dancehall pressure. The instrumental has a steady forward motion, warm bass weight, and just enough space in the drums for deejays to pepper the rhythm with attitude. Later versions on the Taxi label and beyond show how a single foundation can stay relevant for decades, from old-school sound system talk to more polished crossover vocals. This is a riddim that never sits still, and that restlessness is exactly why it still matters.
