Shank I Sheck comes out of one of those Jamaican riddims that never really belonged to a single era. The foundation is the 1964 Baba Brooks instrumental cut on King Edwards, a bright ska horn line with a skipping bounce that later generations kept reopening in dancehall and reggae form. The earliest version is all brass lift and dance-floor swing, but the rhythm’s afterlife is what gives it its weight: producers kept pulling it back for new voices, new tempos, and new attitudes.

Baba Brooks, born Oswald F. Brooks in Kingston, was one of the key trumpet men of the ska era, and King Edwards was the sound-system force behind the original. That old-school backbone is what lets the riddim travel so far. In later hands it becomes tougher and more stripped, with the horn motif turned into a pulse that can carry deejay chatter, lover’s rock, and militant singjay work without losing its identity.

The cuts that matter most here show how flexible the rhythm is. Triston Palma’s Run Around Woman turns it into a classic early-80s dancehall mover, with that easy, rough-edged singjay phrasing that made Palma such a useful voice in the era. Bobby Ellis’s Shank I Shenk pushes the old melody back into instrumental territory, while Admiral Bailey’s Winey Winey and Beenie Man’s Jah Power show how far the riddim could stretch into the digital age without losing the familiar hook. This is the kind of riddim that keeps getting re-cut because the source is so strong: a ska classic that still sounds ready for another pass.
