Sling Shot Riddim (2005) - Blaxx Records

Blaxxx Records’ Sling Shot Riddim landed in 2005, in the middle of a period when dancehall one-riddims were driving the dance. Daniel “Blaxxx” Lewis was already known in the scene as a producer with a sharp ear for hard-edged Jamaican rhythm work, and this set sits comfortably alongside his other mid-2000s juggling projects. The beat hits with a taut, spring-loaded bounce: stripped-down drums, a clipped skank, and enough low-end pressure to carry war tunes, straight-talk scorcher, and melodic hooks without losing its snap.

The lineup mixes heavyweights with artists who were then pushing hard for rotation. Vybz Kartel’s “Ready Fi Dead” and “Nah Tell Nobody” bring his cold-blooded, knife-edge delivery to the riddim’s more menacing side. Beenie Man’s “Privately” and Sean Paul and Looga Man’s “Fresh” give the set commercial voltage, while T. O. K. ’s “The One” adds harmony-driven contrast. Fantan Mojah’s “Eternal Love” cuts against the tough-guy posture with a more rootsy, uplifted tone, and Mavado’s “Want War” keeps the tension high with the militant phrasing that was beginning to define his rise. Ce’Cile’s “Tell” and Tami Chynn’s “Everytime” bring a smoother, feminine counterpoint, and Lexxus, Buccaneer and Kid Kurupt keep the juggling moving with streetwise, dance-ready cuts.

What makes Sling Shot work is the balance: enough aggression for the war side, enough melody and charisma to keep it from becoming one-note. It’s a snapshot of 2005 dancehall when the selector needed contrast, and this riddim gave it to them.
