Katana Riddim – Big Yard Productions

A sharp, metallic dancehall pulse runs through this one, all taut drums and a little swagger in the low end, the kind of 2005 Big Yard production that feels tuned for the sound system rather than the sofa. Bounty Killer cuts through it with “Top Billing, ” which pairs neatly with Shaggy’s smoother turn on “Ready Fi Di Ride”; that contrast is half the fun here, since Big Yard knew exactly how to frame the rougher edge of Bounty against Shaggy’s radio polish. Wayne Wonder’s “Di Agony” keeps the momentum alive, and the little “Mini Megamix” with Voice Mail, Bounty Killer, Shaggy, Wayne Wonder and Tanya Stephens feels like a quick snapshot of the label’s reach at the time, almost tossed off, but in a good way.
