Noisier and meaner than your average 2007 Big Ship set, the Darker Shadow riddim has that taut, pressure-cooker feel Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor was dialing in around that period: sharp drums, a hard rolling bassline, and just enough space for the vocals to jab through. Mavado’s “Brown Bottle” is the obvious anchor, with Vybz Kartel turning up twice on “My Gun” and “My Scheme, ” and the roster also catches Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Teflon, and Chico in full attack mode. Big Ship keeps the cast tight, and the production leans into grimy dancehall energy rather than anything glossy. It’s a 11-track cut with 10 artists on one rhythm, closing out on Kartel’s “My Scheme” after the instrumental’s shadowy pulse has done most of the talking.
