Reggae Rollers Riddim – Bowls Jamaica

Following on from the history making first appearance of the Jamaican lawn bowls team in this years Commonwealth Games. Andrew Newell introduces this sun-shining summer dancehall riddim named after the bowls team. Nicknamed the “Reggae Rollers Riddim” The Riddim Compilation EP features tracks from reggae giants “Anthony B” and “Turbulence” and includes artists from the UK, Jamaica and Gambia. A UK rap artist makes this Riddim a truly world wide affair. The tracks displays the versatility of the artists as well as their ability to literally entice the listener. This one comes off less like a routine dancehall juggling and more like a themed summer project with a bit of public spirit behind it, nodding to Jamaica’s first Commonwealth Games lawn bowls team and the “Reggae Rollers” nickname Andrew Newell hangs on the concept. Bowls Jamaica keeps the production bright and breezy, but the cast gives it weight: Anthony B opens with “Nothing Ova Me, ” Turbulence cuts through on “All Fake, ” and the Pellachi/Volcano pairing on “All White” is the kind of dual-version move that gives the riddim some extra mileage. There’s also a nice spread of voices from Ricardo Rawal and Skanja to Cyrus Da Virus and Eye – Shell on “Sky Is The Limit, ” which helps the set move from straight-up singjay energy into a more international mix, with UK and Gambia names in the lineup. The sequencing feels deliberate, starting with the bigger names before widening out into the newer and more experimental cuts.
