THE PARTY RIDDIM produced by STEPHEN MCGREGOR 2007
Stephen McGregor’s Party Riddim hits like a proper late-2000s dancehall juggling: bright, rowdy, and geared for the dance floor, with enough bounce in the drums to keep the whole thing moving without ever feeling rushed. Beenie Man’s “They Should Know This” and Elephant Man’s “Suck Yu Mumma” bring the big-stage swagger, while Aidonia and Vybz Kartel lock in the sharper, more aggressive edge that made this era of riddim culture so addictive. There’s a nice spread across the lineup too, from Macka Diamond to Voicemail and Wayne Marshall, so the project never settles into one mood for too long. McGregor, better known as Di Genius, was still in that early stretch where his ear for catchy, high-impact dancehall was becoming impossible to miss. It closes with “The Party Riddim Version, ” and that instrumental leaves the whole thing ringing in your head like the night isn’t finished yet.
