SUMO RIDDIM produced by VARIOUS ARTISTS 2011
Sumo Overview
Back in 2011, sound systems across the Carnival streets were pumping out the Sumo Riddim. This was a big moment for soca music and sound system culture. DJs loved this riddim because it had that heavy, rolling bass and bright horns that made the crowd dance and wave their flags. The Sumo Riddim was built for big speakers and open air, making it perfect for parades and street parties. The producer behind Sumo Riddim goes by VARIOUS ARTISTS. This is a name used when many different musicians or producers come together on one project. VARIOUS ARTISTS projects are common in soca and dancehall, bringing together fresh voices and styles. This release was put out on a label known for supporting Carnival music. Band leaders played a big role during Carnival, guiding their groups and helping the energy stay high as the Sumo Riddim played. The band leader’s job was to keep everyone moving and to hype up the crowd, making the riddim even more powerful. The artists on this riddim were some of the best. Lyrikal brought the song Ramajay, a track that showed off his smooth style. Problem Child teamed up with Jadine for Doh Waste D Wine, and also dropped Guts'In Time on his own. Ragga gave us Violate, while T.O.K delivered Supa Soka. T.O.K are also known for their global dancehall hit Footprints. These songs made Sumo Riddim a true Carnival favorite.
