Petty Thief Riddim – H2o Productions

H2O Productions’ 2006 Petty Thief Riddim lands in the same hard-edged dancehall pocket that made the label such a force in the era. Built by Craig Marsh and Michael Brissett, the riddim draws on the classic Cuss Cuss pattern and turns it into a grimy, street-level framework with a tense bounce, clipped drums and a bare-bones pulse that leaves plenty of room for deejays to sharpen their warning shots.

The strongest cuts come from the names that owned that moment. Bounty Killer is in his cold-blooded mode on Slang Slang (Killer Angry), while Busy Signal’s 2 Much Gun rides the rhythm with a direct, no-frills singjay flow. Elephant Man’s Wild Shot pushes the energy higher, and Vybz Kartel’s Politics gives the set one of its sharper talk-up moments. The opening combination with Bling Dawg, Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer on Full Up Of Grass also sets the tone early, with three voices trading attitude over a rhythm that stays lean and hostile.

Macka Diamond, Mavado, Mr. Vegas, Delly Ranx, General Degree, Chico and Tazz, Mr. Lexx and others fill out the set with the kind of gun-talk, cautionary lyrics and streetwise bravado that suited the riddim’s title. As a project, Petty Thief sits neatly inside H2O’s 2006 run: a tough, selector-friendly dancehall drop made for dubplate pressure and bashment replay.
