Kiki Riddim – K-Licious Music

Kiki Riddim lands in 1999, one of Tony “CD” Kelly’s sharpest late-’90s K-Licious productions. Kelly’s name is attached to some of the era’s most durable juggling cuts, and this one sits right in that run: heavy on personality, easy to recognize, and tuned for radio and sound system alike.

The rhythm has that crisp, springy dancehall bounce that marked Kelly’s best work. The groove is clean and memorable, with a hook that catches fast and a forward-driving swing that gives each voice room to cut through. It feels built for big-plate singles rather than a sleepy compilation, and the best verses ride the beat with that sly mix of humor, bravado, and streetwise tension that made late-’90s dancehall so addictive.

The lineup is stacked in the way only a serious Tony Kelly juggling could be. Delly Ranks opens strong with “Head A Di House, ” while Merciless brings his usual sharp-edged bite to “Let Dem Have It” and “Petty Thief. ” General Degree’s “Gwaan Good” adds easy swagger, and Buju Banton’s “Opportunity” gives the riddim real weight. Baby Cham’s “Desperate Measures, ” Wayne Wonder and Surprize on “Blazing, ” Spragga Benz with Twice on “Magnum, ” and T. O. K. ’s “Lock Down” all fit the groove cleanly. C. L. Smooth, Lexxus and Xtatik’s title cut gives the riddim its signature call, while Sean Paul, Mega Banton, Tony Curtis, Shinehead and Mr. Vegas help round out a set that reads like a snapshot of dancehall power in 1999.
