Size 13 Aka Swear Riddim – The Net Music / Adex

Size 13, better known as the Swear Riddim, sits right in that late-90s dancehall pocket where the rhythm is raw, playful and built for juggling. The Net Music and Adex handled the production, and the cut is filed to 1998, though some archives stretch its run into the early 2000s through later uses and reposts. It is one of those pieces that feels sturdy enough to carry different kinds of voices without losing its shape.

The groove has that dry, clipped knock that keeps the bass moving without getting sloppy, which gives the deejays room to work. Daddy Screw’s “I Swear” is the anchor for the title version, and the rhythm gets extra mileage from Anthony B’s “More B” and Capleton and Blackman’s “Free Your Meditation, ” where the conscious fire burns brighter than the rest of the set. Anthony B brings his familiar uplift and social reasoning, while Capleton’s side of the cut adds more pressure and urgency.

The lighter, bawdier end of the dancehall spectrum is covered too. Baby Wayne’s “Miss Ockobit, ” La Lewis’s “Caan Tek Yuh Man, ” Megga Starr’s “Woman Ah Run Mi Down, ” Pinchers’ “Two Twin Daughter, ” and Sugar’s “Big Blunt” give the riddim its street-level variety, moving from flirtation to slackness to plain badman talk. Black Man appears twice, once solo on “Scrums” and again with Capleton on “Free Your Meditation, ” which helps give the project a little extra weight. It is a strong snapshot of an era when one rhythm could hold conscious lyrics, dancehall antics and hardcore stance all at once.
