Daddy Screw is a Jamaican dancehall deejay who helped define the
style’s bright, cheeky 1990s sound. Born Michael Alexander Johnson
in Kingston, he first started deejaying while still a student and
cut his first single in the mid-1980s, building his name the
old-fashioned way through sound systems, dancehall sessions, and
constant roadwork. His voice and delivery sit comfortably in the
playful, slick side of dancehall: quick on the punchlines, fluent
in flirting, and built for the rhythm-driven arrangements that
powered the era.
His early years included work with Black Stone and recordings such
as “Dimbo Bucket” and “Madda Mampie,” but his profile really rose
after he linked with producer Dave Kelly and the Mad House camp.
That partnership gave him a string of tracks that became part of
the soundtrack to 1990s Jamaican dancehall, including “Body Good
Like Gold,” “Sexy Kerry,” “Lover Man,” and “Big Tings A Gwaan.” He
also moved easily between solo records and collaborations,
appearing alongside artists such as Maxi Priest, Barrington Levy,
and Terror Fabulous, which helped keep his voice in circulation
across different corners of the scene.
Daddy Screw’s recorded catalogue includes the albums Loverman and
Multiple Choice, along with the live project Mad House Crew Live,
and that body of work captures what made him stand out: a confident
deejay with a natural sense for melody, timing, and audience
connection. He was never just a singles man, though his strongest
songs are often the ones fans remember first. A track like
“Dreaming” showed a smoother, more romantic side, while later cuts
kept his name tied to the lively, party-ready strain of dancehall
that thrived on strong hooks and character.
He later spent time in the United States, but his reputation
remained rooted in Jamaica’s dancehall boom years, when deejays
were competing for attention with sharp style and personality as
much as with hit records. That is where Daddy Screw’s legacy sits:
as one of the voices that helped shape the sound, tone, and swagger
of a formative period in dancehall history.
