Black Widow Riddim Extended – Shines Production

Black Widow Riddim is one of those late-90s dancehall jobs that still carries bite. Shane Richards’ Shines Production put it out in 1998, and the extended edition keeps the original’s grimy, fast-moving pulse intact: a sharp, metallic swing, heavy bass, and enough space in the drum pattern for deejays to chatter and crowd the pocket without the rhythm losing shape.

The rollout has some of the era’s most recognisable names riding it. Beenie Man’s “Gwaan So” brings that cocky, prowling energy he was running with in the period around his biggest crossover years. Red Rat’s “Bizzi Blazzi” adds the playful, ragga edge that made him such a live wire. Mr. Vegas locks into “Big Things A Gwaan” with his usual bright, chant-heavy delivery, while Merciless turns “Gal Sheet” into sharp-tongued badman business. Buccaneer, Chico, Danny English, Devonte, Iyara, and others deepen the set, giving the riddim different shades of lust, swagger, and street talk without breaking its momentum.

What makes Black Widow linger is the way it balances toughness with movement. It has the kind of stripped-down drive that worked in dancehall sound systems at the time, but the hook-ready melodies on cuts like Beenie Man’s and Mr. Vegas’ keep it from feeling too rigid. The 2023 reissue folds the catalog back into view, but the original 1998 framing is what explains why this riddim still reads like a proper dancehall statement rather than just a nostalgia job.
