Bookshelf Riddim (1998) – K-Licious Music

Bookshelf Riddim is one of Tony “CD” Kelly’s sharpest late-’90s K-Licious builds, cut in 1998 and voiced by some of the era’s most visible dancehall names. Kelly, the producer behind K-Licious Music, was already known for clean, radio-ready riddims with a strong street pulse, and this one sits right in that run.

The rhythm has a sly, bouncy feel that leaves plenty of room for patter and melody. It’s the kind of juggling built for sound systems, with a hooky instrumental bed that can carry both aggression and flirtation. Beenie Man’s “Bookshelf” is the anchor cut, and it still feels like the tune the whole project turns around. Lady Saw’s “No Matta Me” brings her blunt, commanding delivery to the front, while Spragga Benz’s “Cute, Little And Tight” plays to his rough-edged charm. General Degree’s “Dem A Who” keeps the energy playful, and Mr. Vegas and Sean Paul both use the riddim well on “Deport Them, ” a combination that catches two artists just as they were becoming defining voices in dancehall.
