Gwaan Bad Riddim – DJ Frass Records

DJ Frass Records came through Gwaan Bad in 2014 with a straight-up dancehall juggling that feels like a throwback to the tougher late-90s school, all sharp drum patterns, heavy low end and a blunt, warning-talk energy. The rhythm sits in that badman lane without sounding dusty; it moves with enough bounce for the dancers, but the tension in the synths and the clipped percussion keeps it on the menacing side of the street.

DJ Frass, the Kingston producer behind the label, has long been one of the scene’s more dependable rhythm builders, working under the Kimani Palmer name and putting out projects that mix established voices with newer names. On Gwaan Bad, he pulls in a heavyweight cast: Bugle, 3 Star, I-Octane, Elephant Man, Bryka, Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Lady Saw, Kiprich and Kim, Mavado, Mr. Easy and Ninja Kid. That kind of lineup turns the riddim into a proper cross-section of dancehall attitudes, from street bravado to conscious pressure and sly party talk.

The cuts that hit hardest are the ones that match the riddim’s confrontational snap. Vybz Kartel’s “Make Di Star Shine” folds badmind commentary into a chantable hook, while Buju Banton’s “Make It” brings a seasoned, uplift-minded edge that gives the compilation real weight. Mavado’s “Nuh Trust Fren” and Elephant Man’s “Empty Di Clip” push the project deeper into its greazy, distrustful mood, while Bugle’s “Dem Love Sweets” and Lady Saw’s “Pay Yuh Fi Lef” add sharper social and romantic angles. It’s a strong 2014 juggle because every voice lands on the same hard frame, but none of them sound interchangeable.
