Coolie Dance Riddim - Scatta Productions

COOLIE DANCE RIDDIM produced by SCATTA PRODUCTIONS (GREENSLEEVES RHYTHM ALBUM #45) 2003

Scatta Productions’ Coolie Dance Riddim arrived in 2003 as part of Greensleeves’ Rhythm Album series, with Cordell “Scatta” Burrell and Everton “Eva” Burrell credited on the production side and the King of Kings label in the mix. It sits right in that early-2000s dancehall moment when sharp, digital juggling rhythms were driving the scene. The riddim itself is lean and punchy, with a skittering pulse that leaves plenty of room for the voicing, and that spare arrangement is what gives the best cuts their snap.

The biggest names on the juggling tell the story. Beenie Man turns up with “Good Ohh” and “Good Ole, ” bringing the kind of easy command that made him one of dancehall’s defining voices. Bounty Killer’s “Yuh Gaawn” adds the rougher, command-and-control energy he built his name on, while Elephant Man’s “Head Gone” pushes the riddim into party mode with his frantic, animated style. Ce’Cile is a key presence too, especially on “Do It To Me, ” where her smooth, suggestive delivery cuts through the bounce with more melodic bite. Her collaborations with Carl Henry, along with the Captain Barkey and Patchy combinations and the Alozade and G Money cut, keep the juggling varied without straying far from the dancefloor.

What makes Coolie Dance stick is the contrast between the riddim’s stripped-down framework and the personalities riding it. It has the sheen of a label album, but the lasting pull comes from how cleanly it frames some of the era’s most recognizable dancehall voices.
