Baddis Ting Riddim comes out of the mid-2000s B-Rich school of dancehall, with Richard “Shams” Browne steering the project and VP’s Riddim Driven series giving it wider circulation in 2006. The riddim sits in the same hard-edged, streetwise pocket that carried a lot of early-2000s Jamaican juggling: digital, fast-moving, and built for sound system pull-ups, with enough bounce in the drum pattern to let voices cut through cleanly. It feels like a continuation of the Baddis idea rather than a one-off throwback, and that older flavor is part of the appeal.
The cast is stacked with names that mattered in that era: Lexxus and Mr. Vegas join on “Taxi Fare, ” T. O. K. turn in “Top Shotta, ” Alozade, Red Rat, Mr. G, Lady G, Kiprich, M’lonie, Macka Diamond, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, Blacker, Monster Twins, Harry Toddler, Ce’cile and Hawkeye all take turns attacking the same rhythm from different angles. That spread alone tells you the lane this rhythm was aiming for: badman talk, flirtation, sound-clash posture and dancehall muscle. Macka Diamond’s “No Fren Mate” is one of the sharper female cuts, while Bounty Killer’s “Ready Fi Kill” and Elephant Man’s “Like You” bring two very different but equally recognizable energies to the set. Mr. Vegas and Lexxus on “Taxi Fare” give the project an instant hook, and T. O. K. ’s “Top Shotta” keeps the pace moving with that group-vocal snap they were known for.
What makes Baddis Ting last is the way it captures that moment when one riddim could still carry a whole scene’s conversation. It is not polished in a glossy pop-dancehall way; it is sturdier than that, closer to the raw club pressure of the period, where the instrumental had to leave enough room for personality, attitude and lyrical one-upmanship. That is exactly what this one does.
