Sidewalk University Riddim – Jam 2 Records

Sidewalk University Riddim comes out of the Jam 2 camp at a moment when the family name still carried serious weight in dancehall. Jammy “Jam 2” James and Colin “Demarco” Edwards handled the production, with Jam 2 Records/Jam 2 Productions carrying the release and VP’s Riddim Driven series helping it travel beyond Jamaica. It sits firmly in 2006, and the cut roster places it in that mid-2000s party-dancehall pocket where big-name DJs were still chasing street chatter and club pull.

The rhythm has a fast, skittering swing, the kind of sparse but punchy juggling that leaves plenty of room for the voice to carry the tune. It feels built for dancing first: bright snare hits, a rolling bass undercarriage, and a tempo that keeps the energy up without turning frantic. The songs lean into movement, wine and bragging, with the instrumental version reinforcing how much of the riddim’s force comes from its bare arrangement.

Anthony B’s “Tek Wine, ” Bounty Killer’s “Not An Island, ” Elephant Man’s “Bruck Back Mountain, ” Vybz Kartel’s “Beyonce Wine, ” and Sean Paul and Wyclef Jean’s “Top A Di List” give the project its widest reach. Tony Matterhorn’s “Man From Mars” and Baby G and Demarco’s “Dem Can’t Mek Me” keep the vibe sharp and club-ready, while Bugle, Delly Ranks, Lady Saw, Sizzla, and Collie Buddz add their own angle. The line-up makes the riddim feel less like a one-off and more like a snapshot of dancehall’s crossover-heavy 2006, when the street, the dance, and the broader Caribbean market were all in the same room.
