After Dark Riddim came through Yellow Moon Records in 2007 with the kind of murky, pressure-cooker energy that suited the era’s dancehall crossover sound. The imprint was driven by Katrina “DJ Sunshine” Irons, with Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor also tied to the production credit, and that pairing gave the riddim a sharper edge than a lot of mid-2000s one-drop packages. It moves with a dark, skittering pulse and a heavy digital stomp, leaving plenty of room for deejays to bark, flex, and clash over it.

The lineup reads like a snapshot of the period’s top-tier dancehall voices. Aidonia’s “Addi A Mi Daddy” and Beenie Man’s “Grung God” bring the veteran-young gun contrast, while Bounty Killer’s “Tongue God” locks in the war-talk authority that made him one of the defining voices of that lane. Elephant Man’s “Dancehall Lovers” cuts through with his usual fast-talking energy, and Delly Ranx gets twice the space, first on “War Start” and then alongside Mr. Lexx on “Something Fi Chat, ” one of the more entertaining combinations on the rhythm. Chino, Cobra, Bling Dawg, Einstein, Erupt, and Fambo fill out the set with rude-boy attitude and streetwise chatter.

What makes After Dark click is the balance between aggression and party heat. The riddim has enough darkness for clash songs and enough bounce for the dance, so it holds both gun-talk and sly flirtation without losing its shape.
