Timer Riddim – DJ Frass Records

DJ Frass Records has long been one of those names that can anchor a dancehall juggling without overcomplicating it. By 2017, the label was already a familiar part of the contemporary Kingston circuit, and Timer Riddim fits that lane with a dark, hard-edged one-drop feel that leaves plenty of room for the voices to cut through. The production has a stark, urgent pulse rather than a glossy shine, which matches the kind of war-ready energy that was running through dancehall at the time.

The lineup is strong and very much of its moment: Alkaline, Mavado, Jahmiel, 3 Star, and Shane E. Alkaline’s “Buss Head” comes in both raw and clean versions, underlining how much attention the riddim was getting. Mavado’s “Timer” gives the project its name and its main threat level, while Jahmiel’s “Trust” adds a cooler, more measured tone that still sits comfortably in the same tension. Shane E’s “Fren Dem Nuh Fraid” and 3 Star’s “Pretty Theif” fill out the set with streetwise bravado and sharp local flavor.

The artists themselves tell the story of the release. Alkaline, from Kingston, had already become one of dancehall’s most polarizing and visible young stars. Mavado, the Kingston-born “Gully God, ” brought veteran weight. Jahmiel, from Portmore, was building his name on a mix of melody and conscious phrasing. In 2017, putting those voices on one riddim made Timer feel less like a random compilation and more like a snapshot of where dancehall’s competitive centre of gravity sat.
