THE BOMBER RIDDIM produced by PENTHOUSE RECORDS 1990
The Bomber Overview
In 1990, dancehall in Jamaica was bursting with new energy. Selectors, or DJs, played a huge role in setting the mood at parties and street dances. When a selector dropped the right riddim, the crowd would respond with excitement and movement. That year, one particular choice stood out—the Bomber riddim. It quickly became a favorite in dancehall sessions and was heard across sound systems island-wide. Behind this riddim was Penthouse Records, a studio and label known for shaping the sound of Jamaican music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The studio was founded by Donovan Germain in 1987 and became famous for its clean, modern production style. Penthouse Records has worked with many top reggae and dancehall artists, and its influence can be heard on countless hits from the era. The Bomber riddim featured a strong lineup of artists. Cutty Ranks delivered “The Bomber,” a track that matched his tough vocal style. Cutty Ranks is also widely known for his hit song “Limb By Limb,” which helped define his career. Sanchez brought his smooth voice to two songs on the riddim: “That Girl” and “That Sound.” Sanchez is celebrated for his soulful singing and has had many hits, including his famous cover of “Never Dis Di Man.” Another highlight was “Groovy Situation,” a collaboration between Sanchez and Sweetie Irie, blending their unique styles. Wayne Wonder, who later found international success with “No Letting Go,” added “I’ll Be Loving You” to the mix.
