ROUGHER YET RIDDIM produced by JAMMY’S RECORDS 198X
Rougher Yet is one of those classic roots-to-dancehall bridges that keeps resurfacing because the melody already has built-in weight. Originating with Slim Smith’s 1967 Studio One cut, the rhythm became a long-lived favourite and later got folded into the digital-era dancehall wave. By the early 1990s, King Jammy had turned it into a sharp-edged juggling piece under the Jammy’s banner, with the catalogue dated 198X on some listings even though the key voicings on this package sit in 1993.
The line-up brings a strong cross-section of that moment: Dennis Brown on “Sharing The Night” gives the riddim a warm, seasoned vocal centre, while Anthony Red Rose and Anthony Malvo hit with the kind of melodic dancehall control that made them reliable Jammy’s voices. Bounty Killer’s “Know How To Survive” pushes the tune into harder terrain, and General T. K. , Baby Wayne and Simpleton keep the pressure on with rougher, more street-level chat. Pinchers adds a roots-conscious lift on “Call Upon Mi God, ” and the duet cuts, from Colin Roach and Jennifer Lara to Sanchez and Risto Benjie, widen the emotional range.
What makes the riddim work is the contrast: the familiar old-school lift of the original pattern against the clipped, drum-machine feel of early-’90s dancehall. It has enough bounce for sound system juggling, but enough grit for deejays to ride it with authority.
