Staga Riddim – Gt Muzik

GT Muzik’s Staga Riddim came out in 2019 and sits squarely in that late-era dancehall tradition where a single drum pattern can carry veterans, uptown voices, and younger singers side by side. George “GT Taylor” Taylor has long worked as a producer and presenter through GT Muzik, with a catalogue that has included riddim projects and singles across reggae and dancehall. This one was issued under his name and cut as a straight various-artists juggling.

The riddim rides at a mid-tempo skank, steady and uncluttered, with enough room for the vocalists to stretch out. It has a simple, pulling bassline, crisp percussion, and a roots-leaning feel that still leaves space for tougher dancehall phrasing. The overall mood is conscious and assertive rather than party-driven, which is why the standout selections are the ones that carry a message with clarity.

Beenie Man’s “Youth Man” gives the project immediate star power, while Capleton’s “Progress” brings the kind of fire-and-faith delivery that has made him one of reggae’s most reliable voices on conscious material. Vershon’s “Pray” keeps the spiritual thread intact, and Lady G’s “Nah Sell Out Me Soul” adds veteran command and a strong anti-compromise stance. Delly Ranx brings a lighter but still rooted touch on “Weedman Celebration, ” and Villa Dutch’s “Keep I Safe” and Mr Khool’s “Ghetto Ambition” deepen the line-up with street-level perspective. Mikeylous’ “Viral” rounds out the set with a more contemporary title and a younger voice.

Staga Riddim works because it balances foundation artists with newer names without losing its core identity. It feels like a GT Muzik release designed for juggling, but one that still leaves a few songs carrying enough weight to be remembered on their own.
