1989’s Poco Man Jam Riddim traces back to the Steely and Clevie era and was cut across a stacked set of Jamaican labels and producers, including Courtney Allen, Bobby Digital, Winston Riley, King Jammy, Donovan Germain and others for imprints like Digital-B, Techniques, Jammy’s, Black Scorpio and Penthouse. Gregory Peck’s original Poco Man Jam set the template, and the riddim quickly became a major dancehall lick that later carried songs like Admiral Bailey’s Gal A You Shape, Capleton’s Granny, Cutty Ranks’ Retreat, Shabba Ranks’ Dem Bow and Chaka Demus’ Teach Them. The production has that unmistakable late-’80s digital swing, and its reach went far beyond the original session, with the same rhythm family helping shape one of dancehall’s most influential sounds.
