Heathen Riddim – B.I.G.

Heathen was one of those early-2000s reggae juggling sessions that leaned hard into consciousness, with B. I. G. lining up a deep cast and letting the vocals carry the weight. Capleton’s “Jah Jah Lift My Head” and Anthony B’s “Fight Me” set the tone with that militant, roots-minded pressure, while George Nooks’ “The Good Book” and Sugar Minott’s “Life In The Ghetto” push the riddim into more reflective territory. There’s a nice spread here too, from Harry Toddler’s sharp-edged “Fooling Them Heart” to Mark Wonder’s “Kings Highway, ” so it never feels like the same message repeated over and over. The project landed in 2002, right in that stretch when conscious reggae and hardcore dancehall were still rubbing shoulders on the same juggling.
