Grass Cyaat Riddim – Shams Production

Grass Cyaat Riddim arrived in 1999 from Richard “Shams” Browne, issued through Call Me Shams and later tied to the Platinum Distribution Jamaica LP release. Browne was already building his name as a producer and musician, and this riddim sits early in the run that would later include Gypsy, Baddis, and Orgasm. It’s a late-’90s dancehall juggling with a sharp, percussive backbone and plenty of room for fast-chat deejays to ride the pocket.

The strongest pull here comes from the combination of marquee names and busy street-corner energy. Beenie Man’s World Gone Mad is the cut most closely identified with the riddim, while Mr. Vegas’s Shout It Out and T. O. K. ’s Hands In The Air push it toward anthem territory. Lady Saw’s No Pay, Mad Cobra’s Tek Dat, and Spragga Benz’s High Grade add more edge, while Red Rat, Frisco Kid, Hawkeye, and Elephant Man keep the tempo lively with terse, animated phrasing. That mix of voices gives the riddim its range: rude-boy chat, party talk, and the kind of rapid-fire interplay that kept sound systems busy.

What makes Grass Cyaat linger is its balance of bounce and grit. The production leaves the vocals exposed rather than overlayered, so each artist can twist the rhythm in a different direction. It feels very much of its moment: rough, playful, and built for jugglers who knew how to move a dance without overcomplicating the arrangement.
