RAGGY ROAD RIDDIM produced and arranged by Bobby Digital for Digital-B Music – BRICK WALL 1997
Bobby Digital’s Digital-B camp was deep in its mid-’90s stride when Raggy Road turned up in 1997, recutting the old Satta Massagana foundation into a sharp, roots-conscious dancehall set. The rhythm has that Brickwall-era clarity: crisp digital drums, a propulsive bassline, and enough open space for the singers and deejays to stretch out without losing the groove. It sits neatly inside Bobby Digital’s catalogue of tough, melodic productions that kept roots message music moving through the dancehall decade.
Capleton’s “Raggy Road” is the anchor here, and it catches him in that rising-fire phase where militant chanting and spiritual uplift were becoming his calling card. Cocoa Tea’s “Wicked Man” brings a smoother, veteran contrast, while Tony Rebel’s “Bruck It Down” adds a sharper social edge. Admiral Tibet and Edi Fitzroy both fit the riddim’s uplift-and-warning mood, with “To Jah I Pray” and “Tough Luck” giving the set its devotional center.
The other cuts widen the picture. Shabba Ranks’ “So Jah Say” gives the riddim some star power and dancehall authority, and Morgan Heritage’s “Live Up” points ahead to the harmony-heavy roots revival they would fully lean into later. Y. C. R’s “A Mi, ” The Dread’s “Love Jah, ” Jimmy Riley’s “Love Unlimited, ” Yasus’ “Black Heart Man, ” and Lupa’s “Babylon Brutality” round out a collection that keeps one foot in conscious reggae and the other in dancehall’s rougher edge.
