Brickwall’s 100 Gal More Riddim, also filed as Asylum Riddim, lands in 1998 and carries the stamp of Bobby Digital’s production camp, the same operation that helped define the sharper, more digital side of late-’90s Jamaican dancehall. Bobby Digital was already a major name by then, known for a crisp, heavyweight sound and for backing artists who could turn a single rhythm into a string of separate moments.
This one rides with a clipped, syncopated bounce that feels built for sound system pressure: hard drums, a skittering digital pulse, and enough space for the deejays to jab their lines through the mix. It has that late-’90s edge where the rhythm feels lean but not empty, with the instrumental version confirming that the production itself is doing plenty of work.
Beenie Man’s “100 Gal More” is the obvious anchor, all swagger and street-level bragging from an artist who was already well on his way to becoming one of dancehall’s defining voices. Tanya Stephens brings a different temperature on “One Style, ” sharpening the riddim with her sly, commanding delivery. Future Troubles cuts through with “Mekeda, ” while General B’s “Cutting Edge” adds another direct, fast-moving deejay performance.
The deeper lineup is strong too: Daddy Screw, Delly Ranks, Shabba Ranks, Elephant Man, Boom Dandimite, Sugar Roy, Terror Fabulous, Powerman, Harry Toddler, Nitty Kutchie and Twiggy all help turn the rhythm into a proper juggling piece rather than a one-song affair. It is a busy dancehall package, but the best cuts keep their personality intact.
