Capleton gives Black Velvet Riddim its sharpest edge, sliding into a 2008 juggling that leans hard into the tense, late-era dancehall energy of the moment. Shiah Coore and Brandon Crooks keep the rhythm moving with a dark, polished swing that leaves room for both rowdy cutters and smoother passes: Future Fambo’s “Negative, ” Danny English’s “Mi Ready Fa, ” Tami Chynn’s “Let Me Give You, ” and Elephant Man’s “Smoke Everyday” all sit comfortably beside tougher turns from Ward 21 with Mr. Pepper and Evil’s “Look At Me” in both edit and raw form. Damian Marley’s “Real Friends” and Red Rat’s “Doh Do Me Dat” widen the field, but Capleton’s “Didnt Have To” is the one that really locks the riddim into place, giving the release its backbone and its aftertaste.
