    Warning Riddim - Greensleeves Records

Greensleeves kept its rhythm album run humming in 2008 with Warning Riddim, a Juke Boxx-produced dancehall set that came under the Greensleeves banner and pulled in some of the era’s sharpest voices. Shane Brown’s Jukeboxx Crew was already one of the key names behind hard, modern Jamaican juggling, and the Warning package sits neatly in that catalog of stripped-down, street-ready riddims that work just as well in a dance as on a compilation. The core cuts on the release run from Bounty Killer’s “Dem Nuh Bad” and Busy Signal’s “Hey Girl” to Demarco’s “Sort Dem Out, ” Mavado’s “Money Changer, ” Munga’s “Wanted” and Elephant Man’s “Gi Dem Hard. ”

The riddim itself has that clipped, urgent late-2000s dancehall pressure: a heavy knock, lean drum programming, and a forward-driving pulse that leaves plenty of space for the deejays to cut through. It is not glossy; it is taut, built for confrontation and call-and-response energy. Busy Signal fits it twice, and both “Hey Girl” and “Loaded” ride the groove with his usual mix of melody and attack. Mavado’s “Money Changer” adds a colder, steely edge, while Bounty Killer anchors the project with veteran authority. Demarco, who was rising fast in the Portmore lane, brings a sharper singjay glide on “Sort Dem Out, ” and Voicemail’s “Nah Change” helps round out the set with group energy. This is a Greensleeves rhythm album that captures dancehall in full competition mode, with each voice trying to own the same narrow pocket.
