Gargamel Records’ 3 Blind Mice Riddim is a tight little 2008 dancehall set with Buju Banton at the center and only three voicings in all. The title nods to the old Three Blind Mice foundation, but this version is very much a modern dancehall rebuild: sharp, spare, and made for bashment systems rather than roots nostalgia.
Mark Myrie, better known as Buju Banton, has long been the driving force behind Gargamel Records, and this release sits comfortably in his wider catalog as both artist and producer. Buju’s own “Cowboys” sets the tone with a rough-edged, bad-man energy, while “Curfew, ” cut with New Kidz, plays more like a street-level warning than a party tune. New Kidz were part of Buju’s Gargamel orbit, and their presence here helps underline how the label used the riddim as a home for his circle as much as for his solo work.
Mr G, the artist also known as Goofy, rounds out the set with “Di Corner, ” bringing the kind of playful-to-threatening deejay style that has kept him relevant in dancehall for years. The riddim itself has a clipped, driving feel that leaves space for the voices to cut through cleanly. It is not overloaded; the appeal is in how each cut lands differently on the same framework. Buju’s “Cowboys” is the obvious anchor, but “Curfew” adds the most scene-specific tension, and “Di Corner” gives the project its most animated dancehall edge.
