Mega Banton is a Jamaican dancehall deejay and singer whose name became synonymous with the sharp, aggressive style that helped define early-1990s sound system culture. Emerging from Kingston and raised in Waterford, Portmore, he began recording while still a student at St Andrew Technical High School, and his early work quickly marked him out for a gravelly delivery and a forceful, no-nonsense presence. His first major breakthrough came with “Sound Boy Killing,” produced by Jack Scorpio for Black Scorpio Records, a song that moved strongly through Jamaican dancehalls before crossing into the U.S. market and helping open the door to wider international recognition.
