After Party Riddim (2015) – Chimney Records

Chimney Records was already one of dancehall’s sharper jugglers by the time After Party Riddim landed in July 2015. The Kingston outfit, run by David “Hizzle” Hayle and Jordan McClure, had spent years turning out rhythms that travel well beyond Jamaica, and this one arrives with the same clean, radio-ready touch that made their earlier work a fixture in the scene.

After Party is a bright, digital dancehall cut with a clipped, elastic bounce and enough low-end weight to keep it rooted in the party. The drums are crisp, the synths flash without crowding the mix, and the whole thing moves with that late-night, post-club energy its title promises. It is built for forwards and pull-ups, but it also has a neat, polished edge that keeps it from feeling raw or messy.

The lineup says a lot about the riddim’s reach. Tarrus Riley brings the smoothest touch with “Good Family Good Friends, ” while I-Octane, Alkaline, Aidonia, Sean Paul, Popcaan, Mavado, Beenie Man, Demarco, Chi Ching Ching, and Assassin all cut versions that play to their strengths. Aidonia’s “No Man To Mi Spliff, ” Sean Paul’s “Ganja Mi Smoke, ” and Beenie Man’s “We Run Road” give the riddim its loudest dancehall muscle, while Tarrus Riley and Mavado add the melodic side of the juggle. It is a strong snapshot of mid-2010s dancehall: glossy, competitive, and made for sound systems.
