Championship Riddim – Di Genius Records

Aidonia’s “Way U A Whine” is the kind of opener that makes Championship Riddim feel bigger than a routine 2010 juggling, because Di Genius sets him loose over a crisp, forward-driving dancehall cut and the rest of the set follows that same sharp edge. Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Capleton and Ding Dong all slot in with their own personalities, but it’s the way the rhythm keeps snapping under those voices that gives the project its momentum, especially when Aidonia and Elephant Man push it toward the party side and Capleton leans into the more commanding stance. Di Genius was already shaping a clean, melodic modern dancehall sound by this point, and you can hear that polish in the way each song lands without crowding the next. T. O. K. and Tony Matterhorn are in there too, just in case you needed one more reason to keep it moving.
