2019 was deep in that post-peak, hard-edged dancehall stretch, and Victory Lap Riddim sits right in the middle of it with a compact set of eight cuts from ten artists. Beatmania and Yardstyle Entertainment keep the arrangement lean and heavy, letting the rhythm do the talking rather than crowding it with extra detail. Dexta Daps’ “Whine Up Pon Me” gives the riddim its most recognizable pull, while Fully Bad’s “Comfort” and Maestro Don’s “Bad Bold And Brave” keep the energy rougher around the edges. The production favours a straight-ahead kick, sharp snare crack and a low bass line that moves in tight, clipped phrases, leaving plenty of space for the vocals to ride the pocket. It’s a brisk dancehall set, mostly mid-tempo, with the vocal phrasing doing as much work as the beat.
